Pride Is More Than a Month

Every June, rainbow flags appear in windows, communities gather in celebration, and we honor the history of the LGBTQ2S+ movement. Pride Month is a time of fun and visibility but it is also a reminder of why this work matters.
Pride began as a movement demanding dignity, equality, and the right to exist openly and authentically. Those demands remain relevant today.

At Rainbow Project Sioux Falls, we believe every young person deserves to know they belong. They deserve to be seen. They deserve to be safe. They deserve opportunities to thrive without fear, shame, or isolation. Yet too many LGBTQ2S+ youth and other marginalized young people continue to face barriers that affect their well-being, their education, and their sense of self-worth.

That is why our work does not begin on June 1 and end on June 30.

Pride is present every time a young person finds a supportive community. Pride is present when a family chooses understanding over judgment. Pride is present when allies speak up, when organizations create welcoming spaces, and when communities choose inclusion over division.

This month, we celebrate the strength, resilience, and contributions of LGBTQ2S+ people throughout Sioux Falls and beyond. We celebrate those who came before us and those who continue the work today. We celebrate the young people who show extraordinary courage simply by being themselves.

Pride is not just a celebration.
It is a statement that everyone deserves to belong.

WIth Gratitude and Pride,

Rainbow Project Sioux Falls

Creating Self for Oneself
At Rainbow Project Sioux Falls, we believe healing happens in community and that every young person deserves space to breathe, belong, and be themselves. Creating Self for Oneself is our newest initiative, rooted in holistic care and compassion.
This initiative creates welcoming, safe spaces for LGBTQ2S+, BIPOC, and other marginalized youth and young adults, to slow down, explore who they are, and feel supported exactly as they are. Through gentle practices and creative expression, we nurture emotional wellness and help build a sense of belonging that extends beyond any single program.
We are proud to introduce the following programs as part of this initiative:
Mind–Body Wellness Program
Holistic practices including meditation and yoga, with additional expressive support such as art therapy and reflective writing paired meditation.
Family Hangouts
For LGBTQ2S+ children under 12 and their families. Join us for a fun, welcoming event designed especially for our youngest LGBTQ2S+ community members and their families. While children engage in structured activities such as art, writing, or creative play, parents and caregivers are invited to participate in Parent Pampering sessions designed to support relaxation, stress relief, and self care.
Rainbow Sharing and Transcending Binary
Support groups for LGBTQ2S+ and transgender youth and young adults.
Queer Words
A creative writing program designed to empower LGBTQ2S+ youth and young adults to explore their identities, experiences, and creativity through writing.
Our Culture, Our Wellness
Culturally responsive mental health workshops designed specifically for BIPOC youth and young adults. Programming focuses on emotional wellness, coping skills, self-expression, and community care, while acknowledging the systemic and cultural factors that impact mental health.
Creating Self for Oneself is an invitation to pause, free your mind, and enjoy your unique self.
